Explore the limitless possibility of creating patterns by printing on fabric with plants. Learn plant dye methods including how to prepare your fabrics for natural dye, how to mordant and how create unique prints using fresh and dried plants, and how to paint on fabric with natural dyes. The workshop will begin with tutorials mordanting for different fiber types, applying plant dye to the surface of fabric to create pattern, how to set the dye with steam, and the remainder of the session will be dedicated to participants dyeing garments and textiles brought from home.
We have scheduled this workshop for the late summer to take advantage of the color-rich plant dye sources available in the northeast this time of year, including foraged leaves like oak, walnut, sumac, etc. We will also work with plant materials like dried flowers, and food waste like onion skins.
This workshop will be lead by Winona Quigley, the founder of Green Matters, who is also a fine artist that works only with plant materials as her paint. Using plant dyes both to print directly on to fabric, as well as using plant dyes and mordants as paint, Winona creates 2D work that is first applied to fabric, which is then stretched over a canvas to be displayed on the wall.
A discussion topic during this workshop will be the dye garden and foraging for natural dyes, and participants will be emailed notes on a variety of dye plants and how to start growing them at home. This session will take place at our Lancaster PA studio on 9/26/26 from 11 am- 4 pm.
This workshop is great for makers who want to expand their dye knowledge on how to create their own natural dye patterns in their own studios or home, as well as those using plant dyes for the first time. This is a great opportunity to freshen up favorites from your wardrobe that are made of cotton, linen, silk, wool, hemp and other natural fibers.

Join us at the dye house to learn about how to make colorful pigments from your leftover dye baths. This is a perfect class for a dyer who wants to expand their textile practice into painting, or the artist who wants to incorporate plant based color into their art work. Neither a dyer or an artist? No worries, beginners are welcome. Lake Pigments are when color from the dye bath is bond to minerals, creating a colorful powder that can be used in paint making, screen printing, candle making and more.
Our day begins with Winona Quigley as she guides you in how to use plants to create your own lake pigments and watercolors. Demonstrations will show how to create 5 different lake pigments out of plant based dyes, as well as how to process those pigments into pans made of natural materials. Participants will gain working knowledge as you create your own pigments from plants gathered locally, mix your own watercolor medium, and how to mull the pigments into ready to use watercolor paint. Each participant will leave with a 5 color watercolor palette that we create as a group, as well as instructions for how to continue to make pigments at home.
