What to Expect and How to Care For Naturally Dyed Garments

While we use the same recipe for all garments dyed the color of the month, we can not guarantee an exact shade match to images used to advertise this service. All fibers accept dyes differently, and even two pieces of cotton from different mills may exhibit slightly different shades. Textiles with existing colors and patterns can be dyed, but are likely to appear a different shade than our product image. We value the organic nature of working with plant dyes and we hope you do too.

Natural dye only bonds to natural fibers (cotton, hemp, linen, wool, silk, etc), and not synthetic fibers (polyester, acetate, etc). Note that if your garment is constructed with a synthetic thread in the seams, the thread may not change color with the fabric. Fibers like lyocell, modal, viscose, bamboo (and other highly processed natural fibers) may take the dye lighter than our product image. The dye has potential to change the finish of any hardware on your garment, including buttons, zippers, etc.

While we do accept sweaters, we typically dye these by hand. This may result in a lighter color than our product image, or a more uneven outcome due to reduced agitation.

Please be aware that over dyeing garments that have been wore previously may exhibit previously unseen stains after dyeing. An example is a tee shirt we found at a Goodwill, after being mordanted and dyed, had darker markings under the armpits, where aluminum based deodorant permeated the fiber. If any previously unseen stains present themselves, you have the option to opt for a two tone reproccessing to cover the stain. Also note that plant based dye does not create a perfectly even color, and tonal variations my be present in the fiber.

Please note that existing holes, tears, abrasion or other damage may be exacerbated by the agitation of our dye machines. Garments or textiles that do not have holes, but are fragile may develop holes in this process. Note that buttons sometimes break or fall off during the dye process. While this happens to only a small percentage of orders, and you may consider removing buttons prior to sending (especially if the buttons are natural materials, or vintage/ fragile.

Do you have a wedding dress, or some other precious garment? Learn more about our Bridal Heirloom Page here.

Depending on how your item was cared for prior to dyeing, it is possible it could shrink slightly in the dye process. If your items have been previously washed warm or were sold as ‘pre-shrunk’ then you likely don’t have to worry!

Natural dyes should be cared for mindfully. Your naturally dyed item will keep color longest with the following:

  • Wash cold on delicate (alone on the first wash)

  • Use a gentle detergent (avoid Tide Original, oxiclean or bleach)

  • Store out of light

  • avoid acids

We do not offer refunds for any of our services. If you purchase and change your mind of about which color you want, you are able to transfer your order to a different color or future dye lot. If you send an item of syntetic fiber, your team will let you know and allow you to send a replacement garment. Please note that we may charge for a second shipping label in this case. If you send an item and for any reason no longer want to dye it, and don’t want a replacement garment dye, please note that we do not process refunds, and only offer credit towards a new order minus shipping fees. If you don’t want credit towards a future order, we are still not able to process refunds and will use what you paid to go towards shipping fees to mail the garment back.

We do insure our packages, though we are only able to insure the packages we ship for the amount paid for the dye service. We are not responsible for lost shipments, though our team will help to recover any insurance money for a lost package.
