Natural Dye Garden: Seed Packets

Natural Dye Garden: Seed Packets

$8.00

Seed packets for both the seasoned gardener and gardening-curious folk. Each packet comes with instructions for germinating seeds of some of our favorite dye plants. All seeds are from the heads of flowers grown by our co-founder, Winona! We are excited to offer the following:

  • Sulfer Cosmos - an abundantly blooming, butterfly attracting flower that yields orange and yellow blossoms. Pluck often to encourage new growth. Yields a bright orange dye bath and makes crisp prints when the flower is pressed prior to bundle dyeing.

  • Mixed Marigold - a mix of marigold varieties, this plant is easy to grow and easier to adore. It is recommended to deadhead these flowers to encourage new growth. Yields rich yellow and green dye baths or bright, luminous orange/yellow prints.

  • Hopi Sunflower - an heirloom variety of sunflowers, this very special seed variety has been used by Hopi Native Americans for generations, traditionally to dye wool and baskets. The plant yields large black seeds which can create lavender to deep purple dye baths. Don’t forget - you can eat the seeds too. You can support the Hopi Education Endowment Fund by clicking here.

  • Rosemallow Hibiscus - a true Green Matters favorite, this native plant produces large bright blooms in late summer. Be patient - this plant won’t blossum for 2-3 years. The flowers should be picked promptly as they are open for less than 24 hours, fall from the plant, and begin to dry out. We recommend storing the blooms in the fridge to keep them from drying out. Yields large blue-green and purple prints or an icy purple dye bath.
